2010 – 2009 HEALTHY BUILDINGS | NAPA, CA
Senior Designer and subsequently promoted to Principal in Charge of Engineering and Design, HBUSA is involved in the design and management of a modest portfolio of new residential projects, commercial renovations and prefabricated concept homes and technologies under the OHOME brand. Responsibilities included all front-end design meetings with clients, managing associate professional consultants and establishing project management protocol via an advanced internet-based file server (3rd generation technology). Andy has also been working to shepherd new business into the company’s design cue with a host of presentations and inbound/social marketing while also developing proprietary technologies in the structural, millwork, mechanical and delivery streams of prefabricated residential architecture.

Design and project architect (CEO and Principal Designer of Sustain Design Studio – engaged Altius prefab projects) with this custom residential firm dedicated to contemporary eco-design. CAD/BIM Manager, LEED consultant and design architect (as architectural intern) with this large practice focused on green, clean, modern residential design (hirise condos). Projects included green design and coordinating MEP, structural and architectural on two winning bids for mixed-use tower-podium projects in Regent Park (under construction), Pure Spirit Condominium (Distillery District), and King+Ontario condominiums, Toronto’s new 4Seasons Hotel and others. Work included green custom residential using rammed-earth, PISE, SIPs, Rastra, cob and other experimental construction. Projects included master planning eco-communities, adaptive reuse of 19th century commercial brick structures to condominiums (LEED Platinum), building verification/measurement, and steel moment-frame condominium tower design. 2009-2002 SUSTAIN DESIGN STUDIO | TORONTO, ON
Founder & President of this small but widely popular design firm focusing on tiny dwellings, based on a simple idea: Smaller homes are more equitable on a global scale, as they use less materials, energy, and land. Projects include over 30 designs, which finally resulted in the miniHOME. The miniHOME (classed under CSA-Z240RV) is completely off-grid, and uses many technologies that are in their first generation of production, such as true colour LEDs, Whispergen Stirling Engines, and catalytic biodiesel ovens. Although the miniHOME is a significant research initiative, it was also designed for production, beginning in 2007. The miniHOME has been featured in over 30 international publications, and 2 television features, including HGTV and CBC’s ‘The Nature of Things’ with David Suzuki. Sustain was wholly acquired by Altius Architecture, Inc. in 2009.

This small firm specializes in the design of site-responsive, custom houses for the Gulf Islands in the Pacific Northwest. Duties here included; energy-efficient envelope and systems consulting, creating construction documents , CAD/BIM administration and web-design. 3D modeling, rendering and energy simulation and product research.

Worked in SoA’s computer lab as a student-TA in the teaching 3D architectural software, animation and VR production. Organized several workshops and charettes on 3D modeling and construction document output. This role has allowed an understanding of the strengths of a cross-platform approach to modeling, documentation and presentation formats production using Maya, FormZ, ArchiCAD, ArtLantis, AutoCad,
Flash, Dreamweaver, Acrobat, Atmosphere, CNC programming and several other digital tools.

Site supervision and project management on a shoestring budget. Ca. 1876 Methodist Church on Queen St. East. Goal was to convert this 16,000 sf. facility into a rentable public performance space, with main hall, studios, restaurant/cafe and offices for Fall 1999. On-site design/build-as-you-go approach. All custom and innovative carpentry approach to meet strict budget. Much reused materials and special effects with paint. Also consisted in a number of off-site renovation contracts for Toronto residences (Ingrid, Nusha, Garnet St. Deborah, Yarmouth St.)

Consisted of: R2000 design evaluation, site inspections & performance tests (door fan), data entry and heat-loss simulations and heating system design and installation, HRV design and installation – acquired HRAI certificate to install HRV and vent. systems – Mechanicals design/install for Toronto’s ‘Healthy House’.

1993 THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT CENTRE (now Green$avers) | TORONTO, ON
Worked as the ‘Home-Green-Up’ team leader for the centre’s flagship program (now a well-known focus of
the Green Communities Initiatives) which conducted household consultations dealing with a water and electricity conservation, renovation and lower-impact consumerism.
